Abstract

The deliberate action undertaken by an individual or group that directly or indirectly benefits the environment is referred to as pro-environmental behaviour (PEB). The university environment can be regarded as a dynamic space that fosters students' PEB through the interplay of motivation, engagement, beliefs, personal norms, and values. Using social capital theory as a framework, this study seeks to understand what variables impact PEB among HEI students in Ho Chi Minh City. From various educational institutions, 296 valid survey replies were compiled. Emotional bonding (EMB) and interpersonal trust (TRU) are two social interaction elements that have direct and positive effects on students' PEB, according to quantitative studies. In group norm (NOR) do not have any direct effect on PEB. In addition, EMB, NOR, and TRU are all components of social capital that interact with PEB via environmental attitude (EA). The significance of trust and interpersonal relationships in encouraging environmentally friendly behaviours is brought to light in this study, which adds to the existing literature by combining students' social settings with their individual social capital components. Both theoretical and practical insights into the processes connecting social capital and environmental behaviour are offered by the results, which offer universities direction on how to improve their environmental management practices.
