Abstract
Purpose of the ariticle - This study examines the relationship between financial distress, earnings management, and corporate life cycle stages in Vietnam’s steel industry.
Design/Methodology/Approach - The study employs a sample of 139 observations from 21 steel companies listed on the HOSE and HNX stock exchanges during the period 2016–2022. Financial distress is measured using the model developed by Fich and Slezak (2008), while earnings management is assessed through real earnings management activities, including cash flow and cost manipulation. Corporate life cycle stages are classified based on Dickinson (2011). The research hypotheses are tested using OLS and Logit regression models.
Findings - The results indicate that financial distress significantly influences earnings management during the Introduction, Mature, and Shake-out stages of the corporate life cycle. In addition, life cycle stage, firm size, firm age, and GDP growth are found to affect the likelihood of financial distress.
Research Implications/Limitations - The study suggests strengthening risk management practices, improving transparency, and enhancing financial reporting quality. A limitation is that the sample is restricted to listed steel companies; future studies may expand to other industries.
Originality/Value - The study integrates financial distress, earnings management, and corporate life cycle perspectives within the context of Vietnam’s steel industry, providing empirical evidence on how earnings management behavior varies across life cycle stages.
Practical Implications - The findings help managers, investors, and regulators identify financial distress risks and improve corporate governance and reporting quality.
Social Implications - The study contributes to greater market transparency, investor protection, and the sustainable development of Vietnam’s steel industry.
