Abstract
Purpose - This study investigates the impact of Global Economic Policy Uncertainty (GEPU) on the financial reporting quality of Vietnamese commercial banks over the period 2008–2024, thereby examining how banks adjust financial transparency when policy uncertainty increases.
Study design/methodology/approach - The study uses an unbalanced panel of 36 commercial banks, with financial data obtained from FiinPro and the GEPU index developed by Baker et al. (2016). A dynamic panel model is estimated using system GMM, while financial opacity is measured using the residual from a loan-loss provisioning model.
Findings - GEPU is negatively and significantly associated with financial opacity. When policy uncertainty increases, banks tend to enhance financial reporting transparency to maintain market confidence and a sound operational image.
Research limitations/implications - The findings support stronger supervision of financial transparency during periods of heightened uncertainty. The study is limited by its sample of 36 banks, its primary reliance on financial opacity as a proxy for reporting quality, and the use of global rather than domestic policy uncertainty; future studies may broaden the sample and employ alternative measures.
Originality/contribution - The study adds quantitative evidence on the relationship between GEPU and bank financial reporting transparency in the institutional setting of Vietnam, an emerging economy with an underdeveloped financial market.
Practical implications - The findings suggest that regulators should strengthen oversight of financial disclosure quality and that banks should regard transparency enhancement as a risk-management strategy when uncertainty rises.
Social implications - Greater financial reporting transparency can help strengthen investor confidence and support financial-system stability.
