Sustainability performance in developing countries: A systematic literature review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Research purpose:
This study aims to systematically review current research trends, identify key topics, and elucidate the diverse approaches developing economies adopt concerning sustainability performance and their pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The objective is to comprehensively understand their progress and responsiveness amidst significant challenges.
Research motivation:
Developing economies face complex hurdles in achieving sustainable development, including escalating population pressure, unchecked urbanization, diminishing resources, and high vulnerability to climate change. A rigorous assessment of their sustainability performance is critically needed to gauge progress, identify gaps, and inform effective strategies, thereby motivating this comprehensive systematic review.
Research design, approach, and method:
A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA methodology, drawing data from the Scopus database spanning 2000 to 2025. From 129 selected studies, we analyzed publication year distribution, major journals, and countries. Studies were further classified into five domains: measurement, organizational capabilities, sustainable business processes and practices, sustainable offerings, and contributions to corporate performance.
Main findings:
Our analysis provides a comprehensive overview of sustainability performance research in developing countries, identifying increasing scholarly interest and diverse research topics across the five domains. The findings highlight both robust contributions and significant gaps in current understanding, offering a clear snapshot of the research landscape.
Practical/managerial implications:
This study offers crucial insights for policymakers, organizations, and researchers in developing economies. It aids in benchmarking sustainability efforts, identifying critical areas for intervention, and guiding more effective sustainable development strategies. For scholars, it delineates promising avenues for future research, fostering impactful discourse on sustainability performance in these contexts.
